In the area of linguistic research, he has published on syntax, the tonal phonology of Chinese dialects, aspectual semantics, and discourse analysis.  His linguistic research in the last few years has focused on using corpora and statistical methods to study genre differences and language variation in general, such as that between spoken and written Chinese.  His current pedagogical research includes the teaching of Chinese characters, literacy at the advanced level and the implementation of technology throughout the instructional cycle. In the area of technology, in addition to a critical survey of the field,  he has written software, software reviews for learning pronunciation and Chinese characters, researched on automatic annotation for reading and co-developed the oral proficiency assessment tool VOCI (Video Oral Communication Instrument).

In service to Chinese language learning and teaching, he established an exchange program with Southwest University in Chongqing, China in 2007 and is helping with the establishment of a new exchange program at his Alma Mater Capital Normal University in Beijing. He has served on the board of the national organization Chinese Language Teacher's Association. He is currently secretary and a member of the steering committee of the newly-established Chinese Language Teacher's Association of Southern California. After serving on the editorial board for a number of years, he is now Editor in Chief of JCLTA (Journal of Chinese Language Teacher's Association).
